Incident Overview
A pilot on a cross-country flight experienced a loss of engine power after the fuel in the left tank was exhausted. The pilot reported that the engine stopped producing power as a result of fuel starvation in the left tank.
Actions Taken
The pilot attempted to restore fuel supply by switching to the right tank, which still contained fuel. However, recognizing that the aircraft was too low to safely attempt an engine restart, the pilot decided to perform a gear-up landing in a field to minimize the risk of a more severe outcome.
Aircraft Damage
During the landing, the aircraft's fuselage and right wing sustained substantial damage. No other preimpact anomalies with the airplane were reported by the pilot.
