Accident Description
The pilot reported landing the airplane on runway 5. About halfway down the runway, the wind shifted to a strong tailwind, causing the tail to rise. The airplane then veered to the left. In an attempt to prevent the airplane from turning, the pilot applied full power. The airplane became airborne, but the pilot determined that there was insufficient airspeed and runway remaining to complete a go-around. Consequently, the pilot reduced power. The left wing subsequently struck the ground, the left main landing gear collapsed, and the airplane came to rest in a grassy area on the left side of the runway.
Damage
The airplane incurred substantial damage to the fuselage, firewall, and left wing during the accident sequence.
Pilot Report
The pilot reported that there were no preexisting mechanical anomalies with the airplane.
Weather
The wind reported at the airport about the time of the accident was from 280 degrees at 7 knots.
