Accident Details
On 13 October 2011, at approximately 1715 local time, a PNG Airlines de Havilland Canada DHC-8-102 aircraft, registered as P2-MCJ, was descending for landing at about 10,000 feet when the overspeed warning horn sounded. The crew subsequently declared a MAYDAY at 1717, reporting an in-flight emergency and that both engines had ceased operating.
Emergency and Landing
The aircraft force-landed on sparsely timbered terrain on the northern side of the Buang River, approximately 33 kilometers southeast of Madang Township. During the impact sequence, the airplane was severely damaged after colliding with trees and the ground. An intense fuel-fed fire began following the crash.
Investigation
The Director of Air Safety Investigation of Papua New Guinea is conducting the investigation. As the state of manufacture of the propeller and propeller control system, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has designated a U.S. Accredited Representative under Annex 13 of the Convention on Civil Aviation to assist in the inquiry. All inquiries should be directed to the Director of Air Safety Investigation of Papua New Guinea.
