What happened

On December 1, 2011, at approximately 2048 UTC, a Cessna TU206G operated by Palmas del Espino S.A. crashed into mountains near Cerro Escalera, Peru. The flight was a non-commercial passenger flight operating under visual flight rules (VFR) from Shanusi Airport in San Martin, Peru, to Aeropuerto Guillermo del Castillo Paredes Airport (SPST).

The aircraft, registration OB-1299, departed Shanusi Airport at approximately 2030 UTC. While flying over Cerro Escalera, the pilot contacted the control tower and was instructed to orbit to the west. Immediately following this instruction, radio contact with the aircraft was lost. The airplane subsequently impacted terrain on the west side of Cerro Escalera at an elevation of approximately 4,250 feet MSL. The mountain peak itself has an elevation of about 4,500 feet MSL.

The accident resulted in 4 fatal injuries, including the commercial pilot and three passengers. The aircraft sustained substantial damage.
