What happened

On January 31, 2012, at approximately 1900 UTC, a Boeing 747-400F cargo aircraft, registration 4X-ELF, was undergoing an inspection at Ben Gurion Tel Aviv Airport. The aircraft, operated by El Al Airlines, was being examined for a hydraulic leak that had developed during a previous flight from Chillagoe, Australia.

During the course of this inspection, maintenance personnel discovered a large crack located in the outer cylinder of the right-hand body landing gear. There were no injuries associated with this event.
