What happened
On July 9, 2012, at 22:08 UTC, an EL AL Israel Airlines Boeing 747-400, operating flight LY-318, experienced an engine failure approximately 20 minutes after departing from Heathrow International Airport (LHR) in London, England. The aircraft, registered as 4X-ELD, was powered by four Pratt & Whitney PW4056 turbofan engines.
During the flight, the pilot observed an indication of loss of thrust from the number 4 (right outboard) engine, noting that the N1 value had dropped to zero. The crew also reported hearing sounds originating from the number 4 engine.
There were no injuries resulting from this event.
