Pilot Collides with Gravel Pile During Takeoff from Parking Area

Accident Details

The pilot reported that a large pile of gravel had been left on the parking area close to the start of the runway. The pile was not directly in line with the runway's starting point but was near it. From where the pilot had parked his airplane, he could see the two signs marking the runway, and directly in the center of his view was the pile of gravel, which blended into the terrain. The pilot began his takeoff roll from this gravel parking area and collided with the pile of gravel while at full power but not yet at takeoff speed.

Damage

The collision resulted in substantial damage to the left wing, firewall, and engine mounts of the airplane.

The pilot reported no preimpact mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.
