Incident Details
A pilot reported that during a landing in gusty crosswind conditions, the tailwheel-equipped airplane encountered a gust of wind shortly after touchdown. The aircraft "weathervaned" to the right, and despite the pilot's application of rudder to correct, the airplane continued its rightward movement. It subsequently departed the side of the runway and entered a ground loop, which caused substantial damage to the right wing.
Investigation Findings
According to the operator, no mechanical malfunctions or failures were present that would have precluded normal operation. A postaccident examination conducted by a Federal Aviation Administration inspector also revealed no anomalies with the airplane.
