Accident Overview
A private pilot experienced a distraction during the initial takeoff roll when the window on the cockpit door opened. The pilot reached with his left hand to close the window while simultaneously attempting to abort the takeoff. When he looked up, he observed the airplane departing the left side of the runway. He was unable to stop the airplane before it collided with perimeter trees.
Damage and Inspection
According to an inspector with the Federal Aviation Administration, the airframe sustained damage, including a buckled engine firewall. The pilot reported no mechanical malfunctions or failures that would have precluded normal operation of the airplane.
Pilot Actions
The pilot stated that he was conducting his initial takeoff when the window on the cockpit door came open. He attempted to close the window with his left hand and abort the takeoff simultaneously. Despite his efforts, the airplane left the runway and struck trees.
