Event Description
The pilot of a tailwheel-equipped airplane reported that the landing was initially normal, with the main wheels touching down first. After the airplane slowed to approximately 20 mph, the tailwheel was lowered to the runway surface. At that point, the airplane began to veer to the right. The pilot attempted to correct the direction by applying the left brake. This action resulted in an overcorrection to the left, causing the airplane to ground loop and subsequently veer off the left side of the runway.
Aircraft Damage
A post-incident inspection of the airplane revealed substantial damage to the right wing spar. The extent of the damage necessitated repair before the aircraft could be returned to service.
Pilot Comments
The pilot stated that the directional control issue could have been better managed by adding power rather than applying the left brake. He acknowledged that his input was excessive and led to the loss of control. The pilot further reported that there was no mechanical malfunction or failure of the airplane prior to the ground loop, indicating that the event was solely due to pilot action.
