What happened
On November 7, 2012, an Emirates Boeing 777-300, registration A6-EBO, departed from Bangkok International Airport, Thailand. Shortly after takeoff, the crew declared an emergency due to a failure of the number two engine. The flight crew confirmed a fire warning for the engine and executed procedures from the flight crew operating manual. The crew discharged the fire bottles and successfully shut down the engine.
The aircraft diverted to Mumbai International Airport, India, where it performed a single-engine landing without incident. There were no injuries reported among the 187 passengers and 16 crew members on board.
Following the landing, the aircraft remained on the taxiway for inspection by fire crews. After being cleared, the aircraft proceeded to the gate for passenger deplaning.
The investigation
Ground crews performing a preliminary visual inspection identified burn marks on the number two engine fan cowl and the thrust reversers. The inspection also revealed soot on engine components and paint blistering on the engine cowling. Investigators found that a fuel line connected to the right variable bleed valve actuator had a fractured weld, which caused a fuel leak.
