Incident Overview
A student pilot reported that during the final approach phase of a flight, he reduced engine power. Subsequently, the airplane developed a sink rate higher than anticipated. The aircraft then landed hard, resulting in a series of three to four bounces.
Damage and Pilot Actions
The hard landing and subsequent bounces caused the nose landing gear to break and the firewall to sustain substantial damage. The student pilot noted that he did not attempt to correct the situation or perform a go-around. He also stated that there were no mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.
