Incident Overview
On 26 February 2013, at approximately 2232 UTC, a Boeing 757-200 operated by Icelandair was descending into Keflavik, Iceland, after a flight from Kastrup, Denmark. While at the top of the descent, the flight crew received an EICAS message indicating a right hydraulic system failure.
Approach and Loss of Control
During the final approach, approximately 4 nautical miles from Runway 20, the flight crew selected landing flaps. At that moment, the autopilot was engaged, and the airplane suddenly banked to the left and lost altitude. The crew encountered difficulty regaining control. Once control was established, the airplane regained altitude while the crew troubleshot the problem.
Landing and Outcome
The airplane landed on Runway 20 with the flaps retracted. There were no injuries.
Investigation
The Air Accident Investigation Board (AAIB) of Iceland is investigating the incident. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) appointed an Accredited Representative to assist under ICAO Annex 13, as the State of Design and Manufacture of the aircraft.
