Accident Overview
The pilot of a tailwheel-equipped airplane was landing on a remote airstrip located on a frozen snow-covered lake. The airstrip was approximately 1,400 feet long, with a turn-around area at the south end. The surface appeared to be hard compacted snow before landing.
Sequence of Events
Before beginning the approach, the pilot selected a touchdown point in the turn-around area to maximize use of the available landing surface. After touchdown, the main wheels sank into soft snow, causing the airplane to nose over. The accident resulted in substantial damage to the rudder, lift struts, and wings.
Pilot Observations
Upon exiting the airplane, the pilot realized that the turn-around area consisted of loose soft snow that had not been compacted. The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or anomalies that would have precluded normal operation.
