Accident Details
The pilot of a glider was on a one-mile final approach to runway 36 at an altitude of 800 feet with the engine stowed. Noting changing winds, the pilot extended the flaps. The airspeed was between 55 and 60 knots when the airbrakes were deployed to initiate a descent. The glider began descending at a rapid rate, and the pilot closed the airbrakes to reduce the descent rate. However, the pilot realized the glider was too low to reach the intended runway and subsequently collided with a tree.
Damage and Examination
A post-accident examination revealed substantial damage to the left wing. The pilot reported no preimpact mechanical malfunctions or failures that would have precluded normal operation.
