Event Summary
A pilot attempted to land at a destination airport where a tailwind condition existed. According to the pilot, a strong gust of wind occurred on short final, pushing the airplane a few hundred feet down the runway. The gust occurred after the decision point for a go-around because of power lines at the opposite end of the runway. The pilot chose to continue with the landing.
Runway Excursion
The airplane exited the end of the runway, crossed a ditch, and came to rest on a street near the runway. The runway excursion resulted in substantial spar damage to the aircraft.
Pilot Report
The pilot reported that there were no mechanical malfunctions with the airplane during the flight. The pilot also noted that a safety recommendation from the experience was to cancel the flight altogether because of weather conditions.
