Incident Overview
A student pilot on a supervised solo flight was performing circuits in the airport traffic pattern. After an uneventful lap around the pattern, the pilot initiated the final approach to the runway.
Approach and Landing
During the final approach, the pilot maintained a nose-low attitude to prevent a loss of airspeed. The pilot subsequently flared the airplane too late, resulting in the nose landing gear striking the runway with excessive force.
Damage and Investigation
The hard impact caused substantial damage to the engine firewall. The pilot reported no pre-impact mechanical issues with the airplane, and a post-accident examination by a Federal Aviation Administration inspector found no mechanical anomalies.
