Incident Details
A helicopter was conducting a tree trimming operation using an external load aerial power saw. During the flight, the pilot observed a 6- to 8-inch piece of wood or tree flying upward on the left side of the helicopter. The wood then contacted one of the main rotor blades, causing a momentary vibration. The pilot reported that after the contact, everything returned to normal.
Precautionary Landing
The pilot decided to perform a precautionary landing in a nearby field to inspect the aircraft. The landing was completed without further incident, and the helicopter was safely brought to the ground.
Aircraft Damage
Examination of the main rotor blade revealed substantial damage as a result of the contact with the flying debris. The damage was severe enough to require replacement of the affected blade before the helicopter could resume operations.
