During a soft field takeoff training exercise, a student pilot and instructor lost control after a series of yaws. The airplane stalled and struck terrain, resulting in substantial damage.

Accident Details

A flight instructor and a student pilot were conducting a training flight focused on practicing a soft field takeoff procedure. During the takeoff roll, the airplane began to yaw to the right. After the main landing gear wheels departed the runway, the airplane continued its rightward movement. The flight instructor instructed the student to correct back toward the center of the runway. Subsequently, the airplane yawed to the left past the runway heading, and the pitch attitude increased.

Attempting to regain control, the flight instructor tried to take control of the airplane, but the student did not release the controls. The instructor then attempted to reduce the pitch attitude; however, the airplane stalled and impacted terrain adjacent to the runway. The accident resulted in substantial damage to the fuselage of the airplane.

Post-Accident Findings

The flight instructor reported that there were no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation. No other factors were identified in the source.
