Incident Overview
A glider pilot reported departing with an observed thunderstorm approximately 50 miles from the airport. After about two hours aloft, the pilot heard that other glider pilots had returned due to the approaching storm and decided to return as well.
Landing and Ground Loop
During the approach to the airport, the pilot encountered rain and gusting winds up to 38 knots. The glider touched down with a left crosswind. On the landing roll, the left wing impacted the ground, causing the glider to ground loop. The accident resulted in substantial damage to the empennage.
Pilot Statement
The pilot stated that there were no mechanical deficiencies with the glider. He further noted that the accident could have been prevented if he had landed sooner.
