Preflight and Enroute
Before departure, the pilot performed fuel calculations and determined that sufficient fuel was available for the intended flight. During the enroute portion of the flight, the pilot navigated around thunderstorms.
Approach and Power Loss
Upon arrival at the destination airport, the pilot executed the instrument landing system (ILS) approach for runway 16. While on short final, the right engine experienced a total loss of power. The pilot responded by switching the fuel flow from the right tank to the left tank. Subsequently, the left engine also experienced a total loss of power.
Emergency Landing
The pilot conducted an emergency landing on a road. During the landing, the airplane struck a tree, resulting in substantial damage to the wings and fuselage.
Postaccident Findings
A postaccident examination of the aircraft revealed only a few gallons of unusable fuel in the left fuel tank. The right fuel tank was breached during the accident sequence, but no fuel smell was detected. The pilot performed another fuel calculation after the accident and determined that the actual fuel onboard was 170 gallons, rather than the originally calculated 230 gallons. The pilot reported that no preaccident mechanical malfunctions had occurred that would have precluded normal operation, and he concluded that he had exhausted his entire fuel supply.
