Incident Overview
A pilot reported an accident during a landing approach in gusty wind conditions. According to the pilot, while landing with a gusting crosswind, a wind shift resulted in a quartering tailwind component. After the pilot had lowered the tail to the runway, the airplane's right wing lifted upward.
Sequence of Events
The pilot applied corrective control inputs to counteract the wing lift. However, these inputs caused the airplane to yaw sideways. The yawing motion led to the collapse of the left landing gear. Consequently, the left wing sustained substantial damage.
Mechanical Status
The pilot reported that there were no preimpact mechanical malfunctions or failures that would have precluded normal operation of the airplane.
