Accident Overview
A training flight conducting touch-and-go landing practice resulted in damage to the aircraft after a loss of directional control during a go-around. The flight instructor reported no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures.
Sequence of Events
During the landing flare of a touch-and-go maneuver, the student pilot failed to properly maintain runway alignment. The flight instructor assumed control of the airplane as the wheels contacted the runway and attempted to execute a go-around. However, during the go-around, the flight instructor did not retract the flaps to the standard 20-degree setting required by normal procedures. Subsequently, the airplane bounced, departed the runway, and came to rest upright in an adjacent open area.
Damage Assessment
The accident sequence caused substantial damage to the airplane's wings and horizontal stabilizer. No other damage items were reported.
