What happened

On October 21, 2013, a Piper PA-32R-301, registration N888TP, crashed into trees and terrain near Huntsville, Arkansas, during a descent from cruise flight. The flight originated from Thomas C. Russell Field Airport (ALX) in Alabama, destined for Claremore Regional Airport (GCM) in Oklahoma.

Prior to departure, the pilot obtained weather briefings indicating that visual flight rules (VFR) conditions would prevail. During the flight, the pilot was operating under VFR flight following services. At approximately 13:57, the pilot informed air traffic control that the aircraft was descending to 4,500 feet. The controller subsequently advised the pilot of moderate to heavy rain ahead on the route of flight.

At 14:04, the controller notified the pilot of developing heavy precipitation. The pilot expressed an intention to perform a 180-degree turn. The controller then suggested a heading of 350 degrees to fly north toward Huntsville to avoid the weather. The pilot acknowledged the instruction and transitioned to a heading of 360 degrees. Shortly after this maneuver, radar data showed the aircraft began a high-rate descent. No further communications were received from the pilot. The wreckage was located the following morning via an emergency locator transmitter.

The investigation

Investigators examined the wreckage, which was found in a fragmented state in a hilly, tree-covered area. The debris path showed the aircraft struck trees below a hill crest and continued 450 feet to the base of the hill. All major components of the N888TP were accounted for. Damage to the wings, empennage, and fuselage was consistent with overload during impact. The engine was separated from its mount, and the propeller blades exhibited S-shaped bending.

No pre-impact anomalies were found in the airframe or engine that would have prevented normal operation. A review of the engine showed that one magneto had a distributor gear separation consistent with impact damage. The airspeed indicator's needle was found resting near 200 knots.

Meteorological analysis confirmed a cold front was passing through the region, bringing overcast skies and light to moderate rain. While radar did not show strong convective activity or thunderstorms, a band of light-intensity echoes was present along the flight path.
