Event Details
A pilot reported that after touching down on a grass and sod airstrip, the landing roll proceeded normally for approximately 100 feet. Subsequently, the airplane came to an abrupt stop, as if it had struck an obstacle. The sudden deceleration caused the aircraft to nose over, resulting in substantial damage to the rudder and wings.
Inspection Findings
Following the incident, the pilot and ranch personnel examined the landing area. They traced the airplane's tracks back toward the touchdown point and discovered a large hole measuring approximately 24 inches in depth. The hole was located in line with the right tire track and appeared to have been dug by an animal.
Pilot Report
The pilot stated that he did not observe the hole during the downwind leg, base leg, or final approach. He also reported that there were no preimpact mechanical malfunctions or failures that would have prevented normal operation of the airplane.
