What happened
On December 8, 2013, a Piper PA 16, registration N6913, was involved in an accident during the landing phase at San Carlos, CA. The pilot reported that the initial landing of the tailwheel-equipped aircraft was uneventful. However, during the subsequent landing roll, the pilot lost control of the aircraft, resulting in a ground loop to the right.
During the excursion, the left wing and the elevator struck the ground, causing substantial damage to both components. There were no injuries reported following the event.
The investigation
The pilot stated that there were no mechanical failures or malfunctions involving the engine or the airframe that would have prevented the aircraft from operating normally.
