Accident Details
A pilot reported that while conducting an instrument landing system (ILS) approach in instrument meteorological conditions, she descended into fog approximately 1,000 feet above ground level. Despite the reduced visibility, she continued the approach beyond the minimum descent altitude. The pilot stated that she did not see the runway or runway environment until she was beyond the 1,000-foot runway markings. At that point, she realized the airplane had drifted to the right of the runway.
Maneuver and Landing
The pilot attempted to maneuver the airplane toward the runway. However, the airplane landed hard in a grassy, mud-covered area off the right side of the runway.
Aircraft Damage
A postaccident examination of the airplane revealed that the fuselage had sustained structural damage.
Pilot Report
The pilot reported no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.
