A single-engine aircraft caught fire and sustained significant damage after striking a dirt berm during takeoff from a private runway.

What happened

On January 26, 2014, a Cessna 170, registration N2594V, was performing a takeoff from a private dirt runway in Wikieup, Arizona. During the takeoff roll, the aircraft's main wheel landing gear made contact with a dirt berm. This impact caused the airplane to nose over. Following the nose-over, a post-accident fire occurred, which destroyed the fuselage and the inboard sections of both wings.

The pilot reported that there were no mechanical malfunctions or failures prior to the accident that would have prevented normal operation. The weather conditions at the time were Visual Meteorological Conditions (VMC) with 10 statute mile visibility. There were no injuries resulting from the accident.
