What happened

On March 9, 2014, a McDonnell Douglas MD-11F cargo aircraft, registration PH-MCU, operated by Martinair, experienced an uncontained failure of its No. 2 engine during the initial climb phase. The engine involved was a Pratt & Whitney (P&W) PW4462 turbofan. Following the failure, the crew performed an in-flight turnback and successfully completed an emergency landing at Tenerife South Airport (TFS) on Tenerife Island, Canary Islands, Spain. There were no injuries resulting from the event.
