Accident Overview
A student pilot flying a single-engine airplane was returning from a local flight and had entered the traffic pattern with the intention of landing. Upon turning final, the pilot observed that the aircraft was positioned to the right of the runway centerline. In an effort to realign with the runway, the pilot initiated a left turn. During this maneuver, the pilot had to apply additional correction due to a slight crosswind.
Sequence of Events
After eventually centering the airplane, it was aligned with the left side of the runway, about 25 feet over the runway lighting and in a descent. The pilot decided to discontinue the landing and executed a go-around. However, during the go-around, the airplane descended abruptly, dropping an estimated 12 to 15 feet. It then struck the ground, causing the nose gear to collapse before the aircraft came to rest on the runway.
Aircraft Damage
A postaccident examination conducted by the Federal Aviation Administration revealed substantial damage to both wings. The pilot reported no pre-impact mechanical malfunctions or anomalies that could have precluded normal operation.
Findings
The investigation did not identify any mechanical issues that contributed to the accident. The occurrence appears to have resulted from the pilot's handling during the approach and go-around, particularly the loss of altitude during the attempted go-around.
