Incident Overview
A weight shift aircraft sustained substantial damage to both wings after tipping onto its side during startup. The aircraft was equipped with a floor-mounted, foot-operated throttle.
Sequence of Events
According to the flight instructor, upon startup, the pilot receiving instruction inadvertently applied full throttle while placing his right foot on the pedal power control unit. This caused the weight shift aircraft to begin moving toward a parked jet. In response, the flight instructor turned the aircraft sharply, resulting in the aircraft tipping onto its side.
Damage and Mechanical Status
The incident resulted in substantial damage to both wings of the aircraft. The flight instructor reported that there were no pre-impact mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airframe or engine that would have precluded normal operation.
