Accident Overview
A pilot conducting a cross-country flight reported encountering a significant crosswind component with gusty and windshear-like conditions approximately 2 miles from the destination airport. To manage the approach, the pilot established the airplane in a slip maneuver and continued toward the runway.
Sequence of Events
While over the runway, the pilot realized he had passed the intended point of landing. He then applied full throttle, added right rudder, and pitched the airplane to a climb attitude to initiate a go-around. At that moment, the airplane was struck by a significant wind gust, causing it to veer to the left toward a tree line. The left wing made contact with a tree, after which the airplane impacted the ground before coming to rest between two trees.
Aircraft Damage and Examination
Postaccident examination revealed substantial damage to both wings and the empennage. The pilot reported no preimpact mechanical malfunctions or anomalies with the airplane that could have precluded normal operation.
