A pilot conducting a cross-country flight reported encountering a significant crosswind component with gusty and windshear-like conditions approximately 2 miles from the destination airport. To manage the approach, the pilot established the airplane in a slip maneuver and continued toward the runway.

Sequence of Events

While over the runway, the pilot realized he had passed the intended point of landing. He then applied full throttle, added right rudder, and pitched the airplane to a climb attitude to initiate a go-around.
