Hard Landing and Firewall Damage After Gust of Wind Lifts Wing During Approach

Accident Sequence

The pilot reported flying the traffic pattern at an altitude approximately 700 feet higher than normal, intending to perform a short field landing on runway 36. After turning onto the final approach, the pilot reduced the throttle to idle, extended the flaps, and trimmed the airplane for 60 knots. To compensate for wind from 060 degrees at 11 knots, the pilot crabbed the airplane into the wind. Just prior to touchdown, the pilot applied left rudder to align the nose of the airplane with the runway. At that moment, a gust of wind raised the right wing, and the airplane landed hard.

Damage

Following the hard landing, the pilot taxied the airplane to a hangar on the airfield. Inspection revealed substantial damage to the firewall.

The pilot later stated that the airplane stalled during landing when the right wing was raised.
