Engine instability during takeoff roll at Krosno Airport

Casualties unknown • Krosno (EPKR), PL

A Cessna 152 experienced significant engine power fluctuations and instability during the takeoff roll at Krosno Airport.

What happened

On June 1, 2014, a Cessna 152 was involved in an engine incident at Krosno Airport (EPKR). Prior to the event, the aircraft had performed a successful engine test at Rzeszów airport before flying to Krosno. Upon arrival at Krosno, the aircraft taxied to a hangar, where the engine was shut down. After a brief period, the engine was restarted, and the aircraft taxied toward the runway without issue. A magneto check was performed on the runway, and all parameters appeared normal. However, as the pilot applied full throttle for takeoff, the aircraft progressed only about one meter before the engine began to choke. Attempts to adjust the throttle resulted in erratic engine behavior, where RPM would initially increase before dropping sharply to below 1000 RPM, causing the engine to run very unevenly.

The investigation

The investigation was initiated following a report of the incident. The PKBWL noted that the investigation could not be fully completed because the aircraft had been returned to its owner and the individuals involved were no longer affiliated with the regional aero club. Consequently, no further information beyond the initial report could be obtained by the aero club.

Probable cause

The engine experienced irregular running and power fluctuations for unidentified reasons during the takeoff roll.
