Accident Overview
A pilot flying a tricycle gear equipped airplane experienced a hard landing at a remote, unimproved airport surrounded by mountainous terrain. The accident occurred during the landing phase, when a sudden wind shift caused the airplane to descend faster than anticipated approximately 20 feet above ground level.
Flight Details
Prior to beginning the approach, the pilot assessed the wind conditions and planned an approach into a quartering headwind of 25 to 35 knots. On short final, a sudden wind shift resulted in a rate of descent that the pilot attempted to arrest by adding engine power. Despite this action, the airplane landed hard, causing the right main wheel axle to separate from the airframe.
Damage
The accident resulted in substantial damage to the airplane's right wing, aileron, and stabilator. The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical anomalies with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.
Pilot's Recommendations
In the recommendation section of the NTSB Accident/Incident Reporting Form 6120.1, the pilot stated that the accident may have been avoided if a windsock had been present at the airport. Additionally, the pilot suggested that notes in the Alaska Supplement warning operators of wind shear hazards associated with the terrain surrounding the airport would enhance safety.
