During landing roll, pilot realized speed too high, turned onto taxiway to avoid runway end and hill, but struck fence, damaging left wing and firewall.

Incident Summary

A pilot reported that the approach and landing proceeded normally, but during the landing roll approximately two-thirds of the way down the runway, he realized the airplane was traveling too fast. The pilot reduced throttle and applied brakes, but became concerned the airplane would not stop before reaching the runway end, beyond which lay a steep hill. To avoid going over the hill, he decided to turn onto a taxiway.

Damage

During the turn, the airplane was unable to complete the maneuver and struck a fence. The impact substantially damaged the left wing and firewall. No other damage was reported.

Pilot Report

The pilot stated there were no preimpact mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airframe or engine that would have precluded normal operation.
