Incident Details
The pilot of the airplane stated that the landing touchdown was normal. Shortly thereafter, a gust of wind caused the right wing to lift. The pilot immediately applied full engine power and full right aileron input in an attempt to counteract the wing lift. However, the corrective actions were insufficient to prevent the left wing tip from striking the runway surface.
Sequence of Events
After the left wing tip contacted the runway, the airplane veered sharply to the left and departed the runway surface. It then impacted the ground in a left-wing-low attitude before coming to rest upright approximately two feet from a cement block building. The empennage (tail section) sustained substantial damage due to the impact forces.
Pilot Report
The pilot reported that there were no preimpact mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation. The investigation did not identify any anomalies that would have contributed to the event beyond the gust of wind encountered during the landing roll.
