Incident Overview
On October 21, 2014, at approximately 2005 universal coordinated time, a BAE Jetstream 41, registration HK-4503, operated by EasyFly S.A., experienced a stoppage of the No. 1 (left) engine while in cruise flight. The aircraft had departed from Enrique Olaya Herrera Airport (EOH) in Medellin, Colombia. The flight crew promptly declared an emergency and initiated a return to EOH, where they performed a single-engine landing without further incident.
Flight Details
The aircraft was conducting a regularly scheduled passenger flight from Medellin’s Enrique Olaya Herrera Airport to El Caraño Airport (UIB) in Quibdó, Colombia. Following the engine stoppage, the crew coordinated with air traffic control and executed a safe return to the departure airport.
Post-Landing Findings
After landing, maintenance personnel conducted a visual inspection of the No. 1 engine. The inspection revealed a hole in the engine gearbox. No other damage was reported.
Investigation
The investigation into the engine stoppage is being conducted by the Grupo de Investigación de Accidentes Aéreos (GRIAA) of Colombia. As the state of design of the airplane’s powerplants, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has appointed an accredited representative to assist the GRIAA investigation.
