Pilot Aborts Takeoff After Crosswind Gust, Airplane Strikes Snowdrift

Incident Overview

A pilot planned a local afternoon flight using a runway covered with patchy snow and ice. Surface wind observations throughout the morning and afternoon indicated westerly winds at 5 to 12 knots.

Sequence of Events

During the takeoff roll on the north-facing runway, the pilot encountered a gust of westerly crosswind, which caused the airplane to yaw to the left. Unable to maintain directional control, the pilot decided to abort the takeoff. The airplane subsequently exited the runway to the left and impacted a snowdrift. It came to rest inverted.

Damage and Mechanical Status

The airplane sustained substantial damage to both wings. The pilot reported no mechanical malfunctions that would have precluded normal operation.
