Incident Overview
A student pilot on his first solo flight experienced a hard landing that resulted in a series of three bounces. The nose landing gear collapsed upon impact, causing the nose of the airplane and the left wing to strike the runway.
Damage Assessment
A postaccident examination revealed substantial damage to the left wing spar, firewall, and engine mount. The aircraft sustained significant structural damage as a result of the landing event.
Mechanical Condition
The chief flight instructor reported that no preimpact mechanical malfunctions or failures were found with the airplane. The aircraft was deemed to have been in a condition that would not have precluded normal operation prior to the accident.
Pilot Report
The student pilot stated that he believed his airspeed was high during the approach. The hard landing and subsequent bounces led to the collapse of the nose landing gear.
