Instructor Unable to Override Student Controls During Landing, Resulting in Snow Bank Strike and Nose-Over

Accident Details

A flight instructor and a student pilot were conducting training operations, practicing landings to a full stop. The accident occurred during the sixth landing attempt, when the student pilot overcontrolled the airplane during the landing flare. The instructor attempted to correct the flight control inputs but was unable to overcome the student's strength on the controls.

Sequence of Events

After the flare, the airplane struck a bank of snow on the left side of the runway and subsequently nosed over. The impact resulted in substantial damage to the left wing and fuselage. The instructor reported that there were no pre-impact mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.

Damage

The left wing and fuselage sustained substantial damage. No other damage or injuries were reported.
