Incident Overview
A pilot reported that during a landing attempt, the aircraft unexpectedly began to turn left just before touchdown. The pilot applied right rudder input, but it was ineffective. He then applied full power in an effort to abort the landing, but the airplane failed to gain lift and continued to veer left.
Sequence of Events
The airplane departed the runway surface to the left and entered the grass area, heading toward a ditch. In an attempt to clear the ditch, the pilot selected one notch of flaps. However, the main wheels contacted the ditch first, causing the aircraft to stop abruptly. The impact resulted in substantial damage to both wings.
Pilot Report
The pilot stated that there were no pre-impact mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airframe or engine that would have precluded normal operation. No other factors were reported.
