Incident Overview
On May 6, 2015, at approximately 1215 coordinated universal time, a Boeing 727-200F cargo aircraft operated by Líneas Aéreas Suramericanas suffered an uncontained failure of its No.1 engine shortly after departing from El Dorado International Airport (SKBO) in Bogotá, Colombia. The flight was a scheduled cargo service destined for Quito/Mariscal Sucre International Airport (SEQM) in Quito, Ecuador.
Aircraft and Engine Details
The aircraft was equipped with two Pratt & Whitney JT8D-17 engines. The No.1 engine experienced an uncontained failure, resulting in debris dispersal.
Aftermath and Injuries
Following the incident, the aircraft landed safely. A visual inspection of the failed engine revealed extensive damage to the low pressure turbine. Falling engine debris caused minor injuries to several individuals in the urban area beneath the flight path. Additionally, damage to buildings in that area was reported.
Investigation
The investigation is being conducted by the Grupo de Investigación de Accidentes Aéreos (GRIAA) of Colombia. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has appointed an accredited representative to assist the GRIAA's investigation, as the United States is the state of design for the airplane's powerplants.
