Ground Loop During Landing Roll Results in Substantial Damage

Incident Overview

A flight instructor reported that a student pilot lost directional control during the landing roll. The airplane veered off the runway to the right. The flight instructor then took control of the aircraft and attempted to abort the landing.

Sequence of Events

According to the instructor, for an unknown reason, the right brake engaged. This caused the airplane to ground loop to the right. The ground loop resulted in substantial damage to the left wing.

Mechanical Examination

The flight instructor noted that there were no pre-impact mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airframe or engine that would have precluded normal operation. During a postaccident examination, the brake appeared to operate normally.
