Incident Overview
A pilot operating a tailwheel-equipped airplane reported that he performed a wheel landing on a grass runway. During the landing roll, he allowed the tailwheel to settle onto the ground. Upon touchdown of the tailwheel, the tail of the aircraft moved to the right, causing the nose to veer to the left. The airplane subsequently exited the left side of the runway.
Sequence of Events
As the aircraft came to a stop, it rolled to the right, and the right wing and right horizontal stabilizer impacted the ground. The accident resulted in substantial damage to the right wing, aileron, right horizontal stabilizer, elevator, and fuselage.
Mechanical Status
The pilot reported no preimpact mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airframe or engine that would have precluded normal operation.
