Student Pilot Bounces During Landing, Exits Runway

Incident Details

A student pilot reported that during the second landing of his second solo flight, he flared too high above the runway. The airplane touched down and subsequently bounced twice before exiting the runway to the left. It then bounced once in the grass and came to rest in the safety area between the runway and the adjacent taxiway.

Damage

The airplane sustained substantial damage to both wings and the fuselage as a result of the landing sequence and the excursion onto the grass.

Pilot Report

The pilot stated that there were no mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airframe or engine that would have precluded normal operation. The pilot attributed the event to flaring too high above the runway during the landing flare.
