Left Wing Strikes Tree After Ski Slides Off Prepared Snow Surface

Accident Details

According to the pilot, prior to departure from a remote frozen lake covered with snow, the off-airport site was prepared by packing down the loose snow. The airplane was equipped with skis. During the takeoff roll, the left ski deviated from the prepared surface and entered an area of loose snow and water overflow. This caused the airplane to be pulled sharply to the left. The left wing subsequently struck a tree.

Damage

The collision with the tree resulted in substantial damage to the left wing. The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical anomalies that would have precluded normal operation.
