What happened
On December 20, 2015, a Piper PA22, registration N5667Z, was performing a landing in New Castle, Pennsylvania. During the landing roll, the aircraft veered toward the right side of the runway. The pilot attempted to correct the movement by applying left rudder; however, the aircraft departed the runway to the right, struck a ditch, and subsequently nosed over. The incident resulted in no injuries to the pilot. The left wing strut of the aircraft sustained substantial damage.
The investigation
The pilot reported that there were no mechanical failures or malfunctions present in the aircraft that would have prevented normal operation.
