What happened
On January 3, 2016, at approximately 1730 UTC, a Beech C90GTi, registration PP-LMM, crashed into mountains near Parati Airport (SDTK) in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The flight, operated by Supermercado Shibata Ltda, had departed from Campo de Marte Airport (SBMT) in Sao Paulo approximately 55 minutes prior to the accident.
At the time of the accident, the area was experiencing instrument meteorological conditions (IMC) with a visibility of 5 statute miles and winds of 140 degrees at 2 knots. Although the flight was originally operating under an IFR clearance to pick up a passenger, the crew cancelled the IFR flight plan and activated a VFR flight plan during the flight.
Upon arrival at Parati Airport, which lacks a published instrument approach procedure, the flightcrew attempted to land three times under prevailing IFR conditions. Witnesses reported low ceilings and low visibility. During a go-around following the third landing attempt, the aircraft struck mountainous terrain at an elevation of approximately 1,700 feet. The impact occurred roughly 4 nautical miles from the destination airport at a bearing of 358 degrees.
The accident resulted in 2 fatal injuries to the commercial pilot-in-command and the co-pilot. The aircraft was destroyed.
