Accident Overview
On March 7, 2016, at approximately 1410 coordinated universal time, a Piper PA28-140 aircraft, registered as ZS-EXV in South Africa, was destroyed when it impacted terrain during an emergency landing at Mountain View Airfield (FAMV) in Johannesburg, South Africa. The pilot and a passenger on board sustained fatal injuries.
Flight Details
The flight had departed from Lanseria International Airport (FALA), Johannesburg, with an intended destination of Wonderboom Airport (FAWB) in Pretoria, South Africa. The circumstances leading to the emergency landing are under investigation.
Investigation
The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) Accident and Incident Investigations Division (AIID) is conducting the investigation. As the State of Manufacture and Design of the airplane and engine, the United States National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has appointed a US Accredited Representative under the provisions of ICAO Annex 13 to assist the AIID in its investigation.
